He said in his column in the Sun: “I simply refuse to believe that Gerrard and Frank Lampard can’t play in the same team.
“I know they can do it because I’ve seen them — most notably against Brazil last year.
“But if they’re going to work together they have to stick to the rules and do exactly what the coach tells them do to.
“If they don’t do that, Capello will be forced into making a choice between one or the other.
“And I don’t see how that will benefit either of them.
“First of all, they’ve got to play for the team and not for themselves. That’s not a problem, because they are both team players.
“And the simple instruction to both players has got to be hammered out loud and clear — you only go forward if the other fella is not already ahead of you.
“They’re intelligent, talented players. They can understand that.
“Gerrard, in particular, can play anywhere if he puts his mind to it. He could even play the holding role, although I’m not sure he’d relish it on a regular basis.”
