Chimbonda joined Sunderland from Tottenham in the summer.
Sunderland will face rivals Newcastle in the Premier League today.
The 29-year-old said: “It hasn’t taken me long to realise what this game means to fans.
“I know they hate each other. It is clear. I have played for Spurs against Arsenal and that was a big derby.
“People say Newcastle are a bigger team but I don’t think so. Look at the table.
“I love Sunderland because the paparazzi and attention when going out in London is too much.
“I can go to a club here and not have my picture taken.
“I like it quiet and relaxed. I can take it easy but if we lose, I don’t think I will be able to go out for a week.
“I certainly wouldn’t be able to show my face in Newcastle if we win. No way.”
