HSV managed to recover from their 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim last weekend.
“Tonight’s performance had no resemblance to the display against Hoffenheim,” Jol explained. “We showed a good attitude right from the first minute and their mentality was just right.
“I saw a quick game from my side and perhaps it was a workmanlike performance, but Stuttgart are a good team. Everyone is talking about playing midweek, but we’ve been doing that for the past couple of weeks.
“Our attitude was correct and that was the most important thing. We knew that Stuttgart had a good side and in the second half they put us under a lot of pressure.
“But we have Frank Rost in goal and he showed his class in this period of the game. It was also good to be able show what we are capable of.”
