The Belfast Telegraph says Smith has already made an enquiry to his close friend and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson about the Northern Irelance international.
United turned down a £10million bid from Sunderland for Evan in the summer.
It is believed Ferguson sees the 20-year-old as the natural successor to Rio Ferdinand.
