The Viola lost 2-1 at home to Lyon tonight.
“We did show a lack of experience. It was the first time in the Champions League for many of us, so running into a few difficulties was only to be expected,” he said after the game.
Fiorentina were 2-0 down after goals by Jean Makoun and Karim Benzema.
“It was an uphill struggle from the start with those two goals. We tried our best and created plenty of chances to equalise, but did not manage it,” added Gilardino.
“[Mario Alberto] Santana is doing very well in his role, helping both me and Adrian [Mutu], so it’s crucial for us to get great service like that.
“We went close a few times, but unfortunately were kept out by the woodwork. Our attacking play is important to us and we put a series of balls into the box, aimed at hitting Lyon’s weak points.
“We remembered the first half in Lyon and how we managed to cause them all sorts of problems, so we knew we could do it again, but those two early goals changed the plans.”
