Walker joined the club on a free transfer from Leicester in 2005.
The 37-year-old has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer.
“Ian has been kicking his heels for a while because we’ve got a lot of good goalkeepers here and competition is fierce,” Megson told The Sun.
“He asked if he could have his contract cancelled which we’ve agreed to and he goes with our best wishes.”
