Andrea Dossena has failed to make an impact at Anfield, following his move from Udinese in the summer.
It is believed Dossena could return to Italy in January.
Johnson, who left Chelsea in 2007, has impressed at Pompey and it is believed his former boss Harry Redknapp would also be interested in signing him in January.
