The 29-year-old is currently a regular at Big Sam’s Blackburn team.
“You don’t play 41 times for England and command a place at a club challenging the top four without being a very good goalkeeper,” said Allardyce.
“I don’t think he got much help when things started to go wayward for him. From my point of view, it’s about eradicating those memories and making sure he comes out a better keeper.
“He should be thinking about getting his England place back as quickly as he can – although his focus needs to be on Blackburn.”
