Pires happy with new Villarreal deal

The midfielder insists he has not been in contact with any Premier League clubs regarding a move back to England.

“My desire was to stay and sign a one-year contract; as a consequence I am happy that Villarreal’s directors received the message,” Pires told Setanta Sports.

“It means so much to me, and most of all that the club totally trusts me and relies on me.

“No English club contacted me because, to my mind, they wanted to know what I was going to do with Villarreal before possibly making a move.

“Besides I had publically said I wanted to continue with my Spanish club. Paris Saint Germain made a serious offer last season while [president] Charles Villeneuve was in charge.

“But PSG did not try again this year. This is normal because we are in April and we did sign quite early with Villarreal and maybe some clubs expected the end to the season to make an approach.

“This new deal fills me with motivation ahead of the Arsenal games.”
