The Spanish side are keen to strengthen their squad at the back and after failing to sign Emmanuel Eboue and Jesus Gamez they have made Van der Wiel their primary target.
Reports says Atletico are ready to offer Ajax €3million for the 21-year-old defender.
Van der Wiel’s contract with Ajax is set to expire in the summer of 2013.
