Paterson has been undergoing a knee operation after he twisted his knee in the early stages of the Carling Cup clash with Barnsley on Tuesday.
The Northern Ireland international underwent exploratory surgery on Wednesday, which showed a tear in the cartilage that will keep him out of action for three months.
