The game ended in a 1-1 draw after Steven Caldwell sent Burnley ahead but Emile Heskey grabbed a equaliser.
“I think we were well-placed to get the three points,” he said.
“I thought we were outstanding in the first half, our passing of the ball and our creativity. We created numerous opportunities and scored a good goal.
“Brad Friedel had to make one or two exceptional stops in the game, but we always knew they were going to come back during the late stages.
“I thought Brian (Jensen) made a great save when (Gabriel) Agbonlahor broke through. Apart from that I don’t think they had many more opportunities, but we paid the price for not clearing a corner properly.
“Overall I’m disappointed, but as a manager I can’t ask any more from that group of players. On another day it could have been different.”
“What we have to do at this level is learn quickly and make sure we remain a Premier League outfit,” he added.
“Three points would have gone a long way towards that, but we will take one. In my opinion Aston Villa, if they don’t make the top four they will be very close to it, so they have quality.
“But our group of players, the work ethic, I can’t ask any more. It might turn out to be a vitally important point for us.”
