Bent has been a hit at Sunderland since joining the club from Tottenham for £10million over the summer.
“The stats don’t lie and his goal ratio is unbelievable in the best league in the world and if he can do it in the best league in the world then there’s no reason why he can’t do for his country,” Ferdinand said.
“His tally is showing that he is up there with the best in the league. I think he has scored against all the top teams as well so he has shown that he can do it against the best defenders in the league.”
“He does get overlooked at times but that’s football,” added Ferdinand.
“He just has to keep working hard at Sunderland and that’s all that matters to him.
“He’s not just a great player but he’s a great person as well and you need that in a squad of a team that goes away to the World Cup so there’s no reason why he couldn’t go to the World Cup for his footballing and personal qualities.”
