Pulis talked-up Etherington’s World Cup prospects after the game.
He said: “It was fantastic. You know when you play Sam’s team it will be a battle. Things went for us today, but we know that we also played very well.
“Matt has been absolutely outstanding and I just think that if he was playing for a bigger club, people would be talking about him (for an England call-up).
“Matty is playing some fantastic football this season. I don’t think I have to talk Matty up – just look at his performances.
“I am sure there will be plenty of people talking about him and Ryan Shawcross for England call-ups.
“I still think there are some places up for grabs, but (Fabio) Capello is his own man and could make a few late changes to the squad.”
