Boro tried to sign O’Shea from Galway United last summer but instead the winger joined Birmingham.
Strachan is now hoping to take the youngster on loan.
“We’re going to try to get a young lad called Jay O’Shea in from Birmingham,” said Strachan.
“Gordon McQueen knew of him before he went to Birmingham. He can play wide on either side of midfield and is more direct than what we’ve got here.”
