The Japan international has just signed a contract extension with Wolfsburg but Birmingham plans to make a summer move.
News of the World says McLeish had hoped to sign the 26-year-olf for nothing at the end of the season as the midfielder’s contract was set to expire.
Hasebe’s new contract is set to expire in the summer of 2012.
