Ferdinand picked up the hamstring problem in Sunderland’s 2-1 pre-season win at Leicester and was forced off after just 20 minutes.
“He has a hamstring injury and we’ll look at that,” Sunderland boss Steve Bruce told Sky Sports News.
“That is the disappointing thing for me as Michael Turner is suspended for the first two games of the season
“It’s a worry for us – we’ll see how bad it is over the next 24-48 hours.”
