Gyan has arrived at Sunderland for a medical as manager Steve Bruce is keen to complete the deal before the transfer window closes later today.
The 24-year-old impressed for Ghana at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and has been expected to leave Rennes this summer.
Reports suggest Sunderland have agreed on a deal of around £12million for Gyan.
