News of the World reports that the Black Cats have joined Stoke and Bolton in the chase for the 19-year-old midfielder.
Barton managed to break into Preston’s first team last season and has impressed at Deepdale.
The youngster signed a new three-year deal with Preston in the summer and the club have put a £5million price tag on the midfielder.
