Owen is currently fourth choice striker at Old Trafford, following the arrival of Javier Hernandez in the summer.
The Mirror reports that Sunderland are close to landing the former England striker on a £25,000-a-week deal.
A source close to Owen told The Mirror last night: “This is not about money – Michael will get a fair contract but is more interested in playing and scoring.”
