Welbeck is currently on loan at Sunderland for the season and Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has admitted he is keen to sign the youngster on a permanent deal.
“Steve has as much chance of getting me,” said Ferguson.
“It is unfortunate Danny will be out for six weeks because he was playing so well. He has shown fantastic form and he is only 20.
“He has a long way to go yet but the signs are good for him.”
