The Black Cats are looking to bring in a new striker following the sale of Darren Bent to Aston Villa.
Bothroyd has been given a £5million price-tag by Cardiff, but his contract with the club is set to expire at the end of the season.
The England striker has also been linked with Birmingham and Fulham.
