Metro reports that Manuel Neuer has rejected the chance to join United this summer and Stekelenburg has now become their next first-choice goalkeeper.
United are looking to bring in a new goalkeeper as Edwin van der Sar will retire at the end of the season.
United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele revealed last month that the club are still looking to bring in a new goalkeeper, despite of their January signing of Anders Lindegaard from Aalesund.
“We could do it internally, but we have looked at the best targets and we now have a nice one, two and three who we think can fill the job,” he said.
