The Daily Star reports that Van der Sar has recommended Ferguson to bring in the 28-year-old as his successor.
United could sign Stekelenburg in a £10million summer move, according to the newspaper.
“Stekelenburg is indeed the goalkeeper who is at the top of our wanted list,” said Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen to Voetbal International last month.
“We have naturally been talking a lot among ourselves about who should replace Van der Sar.
“Alex Ferguson has spoken about Stekelenburg with Edwin and that does not seem strange to me at all.”
