Crerand believes Rooney is singled out over the elbow incident with Wigan’s James McCarthy on Saturday.
“For sure [it was] a bit silly but the defender stepped into Wayne’s path and although it was probably unnecessary I don’t see the need for public disgust from every quarter of the football world,” wrote Crerand on his official website.
“We just have to accept that now though as it’s the “norm” to criticise United players whenever a mistake is made.
“I also thought the referee dealt with it in the game, he saw the clash and he decided to let things flow and there was no real harm done to the Wigan lad either.
“I thought the fact that Arsenal’s goalkeeper stayed on the pitch in the League Cup Final was a worse decision but you won’t hear too much about that referee this week.”
