Harrison said: “I think Steve McClaren has to bring him back in.
“But the only way that will happen is for Steve to go out to Spain and watch him play.
“I’m biased – but I’m not stupidly biased. I talk to David at length and I know he still desperately wants to play for England – and I believe Steve is duty-bound to watch him.
“It would be a positive move, one that would lift the country’s spirits after some disappointing results – and let’s face it, we need him.
“Even though I’m a fan of Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who are fantastic young players, can anyone really say that they have shown they can deliver the final, killer ball the way that David does?
“I was delighted with the way David played for the full 90 minutes and scoring that goal would have done wonders for his confidence.
“He showed a lot of determination as well as the skill we always expect from him.
“It will be hard for Real to leave him out after that. If David can get a good run as Real battle for their title and the Champions League, he should certainly be in Steve McClaren’s plans.”
He added: “David is a very dedicated professional. I’ve been out to Spain to see him many times and if you ask any Real Madrid player what he is like they will tell you he is a top man.
“A lot of people think he’s a bit soft but in truth he is very, very strong.”
