Scholes retired from football at the end of last season, after 150 goals in 676 games for Manchester United.
He said: “There have been so many – Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke, David Beckham, Andy Cole, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Nicky Butt …
“But if I had to name one, it would be Ryan. He can do everything, play in every position, as he’s shown these past couple of years when he’s gone into central midfield and been amazing.”
When asked about the best player he has faced, Scholes said: “Again, there were so many brilliant players … Zidane, Rivaldo. I remember playing against Rivaldo for Barcelona and for Brazil.
“He was amazing – we play in the same area of the pitch. I’ve been lucky to play with some great players and against them but he was absolutely outstanding.”
