The 26-year-old was linked with the likes of Newcastle, Fulham and Russian side Rubin Kazan over the summer.
“After long negotiations we have found the right solution for both parties,” Dirk Hufner, Freiburg’s sporting director, told Kicker magazine.
“It was very important for us that he remains another season.”
