Higginbotham has been out of action for the last seven months after rupturing cruciate knee ligaments against Chelsea in April.
The former Sunderland and Manchester United defender returned to training last month.
“Danny has been a big player for this club,” commented Stoke boss Tony Pulis.
“He’s had to bide his time, but has done well in the reserves.
“We’ve had so many games already this season, so he has a huge part to play.”
