Simeone left his job as Racing Club boss earlier in the week.
“Hopefully I can be the next coach of Atletico,” the former Rojiblancos midfielder told Fox Sports.
“I do think there is a possibility and I hope that this situation arises.”
Atletico Madrid coach Gregorio Manzano is expected to be sacked by the Spanish in the winter break.
Simeone added: “They [Atletico] are aware of my situation and I think there is a chance to go there.”
