The Mirror reports that the Magpies are ready to sign Butterfield in a shock deal worth up to £2million.
Butterfield’s contract with Barnsley is set to expire in the summer, but Newcastle will be forced to pay for the midfielder due because of his age.
Barnsley will allow Butterfield to discuss terms and have a medical at Newcastle.
