Jozy Altidore opened the scoring early on and an own goal from Benedikt Howedes doubled the lead for the hosts by half time.
Heiko Westerman pulled one back for Germany but Clint Dempsey then scored twice, before Max Kruse and Julian Draxler pulled two back for the visitors.
