The clash is the game of the week in the third round of Premier League fixtures.
Terrible defensive display at Brighton
Much of negativity surrounding the Red Devils has come from a 3-2 defeat at Brighton last time out. The game saw United produce a calamitous defensive display, as the Seagulls defeated Jose Mourinho’s side for a second successive season at the AMEX Stadium.
The defeat illustrated just why Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho was looking to sign a new centre-back in the summer, despite the presence of a plethora of international centre-backs already at Old Trafford.
Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof started in the defeat against Brighton. Such was the ineptitude of their displays both could find themselves dropped for Monday night’s game.
Tottenham started the campaign with two wins
Tottenham have started their Premier League campaign with two wins out of two games against Newcastle and Fulham. It would be generous to say that the north London team were highly convincing in either game.
Spurs went into the last 20 minutes against Fulham at Wembley with the game looking like it could end all square. However, late goals from England internationals Kieran Trippier and Harry Kane sealed all three points.
No doubt Tottenham will improve as the season wears on. However, they have not yet hit top form in the Premier League.
Old Trafford still a fortress
No matter what crisis the team is supposedly going through, the Red Devils form on home soil always seems to remain steady. In fact, the Red Devils have suffered just two defeats in their last 37 league matches on home soil.
The fact that Mourinho’s side have also won eight of their last nine top-flight games at Old Trafford shows that the recent criticism of United may be slightly over the top.
Recent history is against a Tottenham win in this fixture too, as United have won the last five meetings against the north London club at Old Trafford. These are certainly things to think about if you are backing against United for Monday night’s game.
The Red Devils will not magically turn into world-beaters before the Tottenham. However, the men from Manchester will still be stubborn opponents for the north London team.
Will Manchester United return to winning ways against Tottenham?
