James joined Portsmouth from Manchester City last summer and the new deal will keep him at Fratton Park until 2009
He said: “The last year has been great and I am delighted.
“I have enjoyed my football here and with the plans for the new stadium, the future is looking very good on and off the pitch,” he told the club website.
“To be part of that future is very exciting.”
