New Latics boss Chris Hutchings has signed Jason Koumas and Mario Melchiot this summer.
Heskey told The Mirror: “It’s good to see new faces because it shows the club is moving in the right direction.
“The signings are definitely a help to me, especially with the quality of those players. Last year it was difficult at times, not just for me but for all the lads.
“When I came here the chairman and manager told me the direction they wanted the club to go in, but found it difficult to attract players.
“This year, though, it’s changed a bit and hopefully it will be the same again next summer.
“You don’t come to any club to fight relegation, you want to be challenging for trophies, but you can’t all be up there.”
