Ten Cate will make the move just 14 days after Avram Grant was named new manager at the club.
It is believed the Dutchman will work alongside Grant.
A Blues insider told The Sun: “This is Rom’s attempt at making Grant’s appointment work. Ten Cate will fill the gaps. He’ll be the coaching brain, he’ll wind up the players and motivate them.”
Ten Cate signed a massive £2.1million a year deal with the Blues last week.
