He said: “The rugby boys have done fantastically well and it is something we want to emulate as a football team.
“I’m really confident we can, we have been through some bad times but it has made us stronger.”
The England rugby team have managed two finals and two semis in 16-years. England face Estonia today in a Euro qualifier.
Gerrard added: “If we build on our last two performances and improve, I think we can achieve something together. I have met Jonny Wilkinson a couple of times and he is a great guy.
“I wish him all the best for tonight although, unfortunately, I won’t be able to watch because I’ll be stuck in a car on the way home from Wembley!”
