Scotland are in the running for a Euro 2008 slot and will face Italy at Hampden Park on Saturday.
Cannavaro said: “I am surprised Scotland have shown a lot of strength in this group.
“But I am even more surprised that they beat France, one of the strongest sides in the world.
“Prior to qualifying, everyone thought France and Italy would secure the top spots in Group B.”
