Wigan boss Bruce has previously admitted that he is keen on becoming Newcastle manager one day.
Bruce’s former chairman at Birmingham, David Gold, told the Sun: “If I was Mike Ashley I’d do everything I could to get Steve.
“He has two burning ambitions — to manage either Manchester United or Newcastle United.
“He could see them through the toughest period in their history. Newcastle is in his heart.”
