“We shall resist any overtures that are made for our star players,” said Hill-Wood to the People. “I don’t think that to sell our best players for almost any figure makes any commercial sense for us.
“If somebody suddenly gave us £100m we’d first have to pay 40 per cent tax on it, then what are we going to do with the extra £60m – I’d rather have the good players.
“We have never denied our manager, Arsene Wenger, any request to buy a player. I recently had dinner with Arsene and askedwhat he would do if we gave him £100m – and he said he would give it back.”
