Defoe has been linked with a January move to Tottenham, to link up with his former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp.
“If he keeps scoring, I’ll keep him,” Adams declared.
“I am having a fantastic experience and it’s a wonderful learning curve but this is a tough division to ply your trade.
“I’ve certainly not sussed it yet but I am doing the best I can and if we could get another top 10 finish that would be great.”
