Alves became the club’s record signing when he joined Boro in a £13million deal from Heerenveen in January 2008.
“There’s a good chance a deal could be done for Afonso in the next few days,” said Southgate.
“A club in Qatar has put a bid in. We’re not that far apart on valuation.”
