Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi has watched the France Under-21 in action against Monaco last weekend.
Wenger tried to sign the 21-year-old in the summer, but his move was rejected by St Etienne.
Matuidi’s current contract with St Etienne expires in 2011.
It is reported that St Etienne is prepared to do business next summer for around £10million.
