Villa only managed a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday.
Fraizer Campbell opened the scoring for the Black Cats in the 22nd minute, but Norwegian striker John Carew managed to rescue a point for the hosts.
“You would have hoped with two games in a row that we would have been able to take four points from that but it’s easier said than done,” the Villa boss told Sky Sports.
“But we’re still in the hunt and we don’t have midweek games for the next fortnight so it gives us time to get a bit of energy back.”
“Our away record is very good and we’re capable of winning away from home and I still think we are in the race,” he added.
