He told Villa’s website: “There’s no point in just sitting around settling for what I’ve got. I’ve got to work hard and hopefully I’ll get my chance for England and show I’m up to the standard.
“There was obviously a little bit of hope I’d get my chance, but I think if the manager was going to change it he would have played David James.
“I don’t think there is a big gap between all the keepers from Robert Green and Chris Kirkland to me, David James and Paul Robinson.
“I think I’ve got to keep putting in performances for Aston Villa and just get to that next level, which is being England No1.”
