The fee is thought to be around 5million Euros (£4.2m) and would see the 27 year old attack minded full back challenge Eric Abidal for the left-back position.
“Barcelona and Inter Milan have agreed in principle the transfer of the Brazilian player Maxwell” a statement on the Barcelona Website said.
If the deal is concluded, which seems likely, then Maxwell will be replacing another Brazilian left-back, Sylvinho, who left the Nou Camp earlier this summer.
