The Belgian international has been linked with clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent weeks.
“I can’t stay at Ajax if I want to play at the highest level in about five years. However, it’s too soon to be thinking about a transfer this summer,” said Vertonghen to Het Nieuwsblad.
“I’m not even thinking about leaving at the moment. I still have a lot to learn and want to develop at Ajax. I struggled against Juventus earlier this month. It was hard to play as a left-back, as I’m not used to playing in that position.
“My versatility is an advantage in some situations, but it could also work against me. It’s better to master one position than to be decent in several others.”
