The People reports that Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is keen to bring in Barton this summer as both Seb Larsson is expected to leave the club.
Barton has been linked with a host of clubs including West Ham, Aston Villa and Blackburn.
Barton reportedly accepts that he faces a cut in his £65,000-a-week wages no matter where he will be playing next season.
