The centre-back picked up the injury in Germany’s 1-0 win over England on Tuesday.
The injury will see the 24-year-old miss this weekend’s Bundesliga clash with rivals Bayern Munich as well as the Champions League clashes with Napoli and Marseille.
Hummels face a spell on the sidelines until halfway through January.
