The Mirror reports that the 29-year-old has been training with Wigan in order to win a deal with the club.
Caldwell was released by BUrnley earlier this summer and featured for Wigan in their recent friendly at Dundee United.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez said: “You could see how much he enjoyed the run-out.
“We will speak to Steven, but obviously these things boil down to a few things such as numbers.”
